Lewd Ghosts
This is not a nice book! I have to admit that parts of it get quite nasty. I don't apologise because I have my reasons.
For one thing: people resemble those very old houses, with attics that are locked, and cellars that have been boarded up. It can be quite a jolt when someone opens a door or a window, and lets in some light and fresh air. It takes a shock like that to realize that there are corners which have never been swept. There is darkness in those corners. And in the darkness ... something moves!
For another thing: there are the matters of sex and magic. Both of these are very interesting. Most people are secretly fascinated by them. Yet both - together or separately - are very touchy subjects in Britain. Indeed, they are so extremely controversial, you might say they are almost taboo.
If ever we do talk about these subjects - horror, sex and magic - we do it in damp, dusty, distant voices as if we were paddling in the sewers. God forbid that you should lick your lips or let your eyes twinkle. You are not supposed to have any interest! Why is that I wonder?
Horror is a product of our own minds.
Sex is something we all do.
And magic?
